TITLE: The Lure of Strong Field Gravity: Making Black Holes by colliding Stars

ABSTRACT:
The inspiral of compact binary stars is a very nonlinear and dynamic process. The merger of neutron stars is the suspected engine behind short gamma ray bursts and their inspiral should generate a strong gravitational wave signature detectable by currently operating gravitational wave detectors. Modeling such systems requires a number of techniques for bringing together the various required physics, from fully nonlinear general relativity, magnetohydrodynamics, and, eventually, radiation transport of photons and neutrinos.
